Innovation is about doing something new, and often involves experiments to see whether something works or not. How easy is it to experiment in the public sector? And how do we know if an innovation has “worked”, what does “success” look like for something that has never been done before? This session will explore what it means to use experiments in government and what particular challenges governments face when trying to set up and run experiments. It will also consider what indicators, methods and approaches can be used to evaluate innovative endeavours and how to learn lessons when projects don’t go to plan or don’t work out.
